The Academic Clinician track was developed to highlight YSM faculty who provide exemplary clinical skills, and clinical and/or educational leadership. Candidates for this track should hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent, and have completed appropriate postdoctoral training. Faculty in this track play an integral role in their department's clinical programs. Typically, greater than 90% of effort allocation for faculty on this track is related to clinical care or leadership.

Educational activities are expected if the faculty’s sites of practice have contact with trainees and are typically related to clinical teaching and supervision, rather than didactics. Clinical track faculty are expected to be role models of clinical excellence.

Scholarship is not required for advancement on this track. Faculty may be contributors or collaborators on research studies, particularly with research in the clinical setting. Opportunities for research include clinical trials, collaborative efforts, case studies, or descriptions of clinical services or procedures.

Appointments in this track can be on a full- or part-time basis, and there is the expectation of maintaining clinical practice credentials. Appointments may be renewed based on a number of factors, including the continued need for the position, the availability of resources for the position, and the clinical excellence and productivity of the individual.
