Appointments & Promotions Committees
The process of receiving an appointment or a promotion at the Yale School of Medicine is lengthy, and each department maintains information about its own process, requirements, and timetable. However, there are certain school-wide requirements that apply to everyone.
All appointments and promotions must be approved by one of two Appointments and Promotions Committees, which are composed of the dean or deputy dean of the Yale School of Medicine and senior faculty who represent a wide range of ladder faculty in relationship to department, academic, track, and areas of expertise. The Committees meet from February to June to discuss and vote on faculty proposals submitted by the departments.
- Senior Appointments & Promotions (SAP) Committee reviews appointments and promotions to professor in all ladder tracks and to associate professor with tenure at the Yale School of Medicine (other than those reviewed by TACBS).

Term Appointments & Promotions (TAP) Committee
reviews appointments and promotions to associate professor at the Yale School of Medicine (noting that those on the Academic Clinician track are reviewed by the ACTAP sub-committee).
- Academic Clinician Term Appointments & Promotions (ACTAP) Sub-Committee is a sub-committee of TAP that reviews appointments and promotions to associate professor with term in the Academic Clinician Track at the Yale School of Medicine.
- Tenure & Appointments Committee of the Biologic Sciences (TACBS) Committee reviews appointments and promotions to tenure for the basic science and bridge departments at the Yale School of Medicine. These include Cell Biology, Cellular & Molecular Physiology, Comparative Medicine, Immunobiology, Microbial Pathogenesis, Molecular Biophysics & Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Pharmacology, Genetics, and Pathology.
These appointment and promotions committees review and vote on the Appointments and Promotion of those at the School of Medicine. Members attend approximately two hour-and-a-half meetings a month to discuss candidates that are pre-reviewed by committee members. Candidates for these committees
- Must be full professors
- Recommended to have experience with Appointments and Promotions reviews within their departments
- Likely to be endorsed by their departments for these roles

Board of Permanent Officers Committee
Faculty at the rank of full professor who are appointed without limit of term, together with the President and Provost, ex officiis, and the Dean of the School of Medicine, constitute the School’s Board of Permanent Officers. This is the governing board of the School, entrusted with matters of educational policy and governance and responsible for recommendations to the President and Provost for appointments at the associate professor, professor, clinical professor, and professor adjunct ranks.
The permanent officers may invite other faculty to attend meetings of the Board and to vote on appointments and promotions to ranks below or equal to their own. The Board of Permanent Officers offers such rights to all faculty who hold the ranks of associate professor with tenure, professor in the Academic Clinician Track, and the voluntary rank of clinical professor. In all meetings, action is taken by majority vote of those present and eligible to vote. Emeritus faculty are invited non-voting members of the Board of Permanent Officers.
