Hospital Profiles
Emergency Departments
When a health crisis can’t wait, our expert emergency care team is ready to respond 24/7, 365 days a year, at three locations across the greater New Haven area: our main campus at York Street, the Saint Raphael campus, and the Shoreline Medical Center in Guilford. Our board-certified emergency physicians, surgeons, and specialists, as well as emergency-trained nurses and support staff, are ready at any time to provide immediate care for any urgent illness and injury.
People of all ages can receive care at any of our emergency departments. At York Street, children can be seen at a separate pediatric emergency department.
York Street
The Adult Emergency Department (AED) on York Street serves as the hub for Emergency Services at Yale New Haven Hospital. Visits to the Adult Emergency Department exceed 100K per year. The AED functions as a quaternary care referral center accepting acutely ill patients from the region for stabilization and admission to YNHH.
The AED includes:
- Specialty areas for trauma resuscitations
- A crisis intervention unit (CIU) for patients needing psychiatric treatment
- a Joint Commission Accredited chest pain center for patients who are at risk for cardiac pathology but are not exhibiting definitive signs of cardiac disease
The AED is the only ACS-verified Level I trauma center and Comprehensive Stroke Center in Southern Connecticut. Trauma ranges from Blunt Trauma from motor vehicle crashes and falls to complex multiple trauma cases requiring specialty services.
In addition to a full array of specialists and equipment available 24 hours / 7 days a week, the AED has educational, preventative and outreach programs structured to understand and treat the most severely ill patients.
Saint Raphael
The Saint Raphael Campus (SRC) is the site of the former Hospital of Saint Raphael, founded by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth in 1907.
The hospital was the combined vision of the Sisters of Charity and a group of local doctors, led by Dr. William Verdi, an internationally renowned surgeon. The faith-based hospital served the needs of individuals of different faiths and cultures. The hospital was named after the archangel Raphael, the Catholic patron saint of healing. The name in Hebrew also means "God heals."
During its century plus of service to the New Haven community, the hospital grew from its original 12 beds to become a 511- bed community teaching hospital.
In the 1950s, Saint Raphael's established its leadership role in cancer and cardiac care by opening southern New England's first radiation therapy center and becoming one of the first New England community hospitals to perform open heart surgery.
It also established a reputation from its founding for delivering compassionate care that respects each person's dignity, consistent with the values and beliefs of the Sisters of Charity.
In September 2012, Yale New Haven Hospital acquired the Hospital of Saint Raphael, forming a single, 1,541-bed dual-campus hospital in New Haven.
The SRC Emergency Department historically sees approximately 60,000 patients a year, and in 2020 won the First Annual Yale New Haven Hospital Excellence in Safe Patient Flow Award for its operational innovations.
Shoreline Medical Center
The Shoreline Medical Center (SMC) Emergency Department is a 24/7 facility staffed by the board-certified emergency physicians of the Yale University Department of Emergency Medicine. SMC cares for patients of all ages and has full laboratory and radiology capability. Patients requiring admission to the hospital or specialty consultation are seamlessly transferred to the New Haven campuses of Yale New Haven Hospital.
Bridgeport
Bridgeport Hospital is a busy trauma center that serves Bridgeport and its surrounding area. The emergency department sees over 60,000 adult and pediatric patients annually. The ED is divided into subacute, acute, fast-track, and pediatric areas. Two major shock/trauma resuscitation bays are available for the initial treatment of these patients until they are stabilized for transfer to other parts of the department. In addition to providing tertiary care services in pediatrics, obstetrics, and cardiology, Bridgeport Hospital runs the only burn center in Connecticut.
Bridgeport operates some of its residency programs jointly with Yale New Haven Hospital and others independently. The emergency medicine residency was planned jointly by Bridgeport and YNHH, to allow residents exposure to a community hospital experience.
