Yale Emergency Medicine Residency Area of Concentration (AoC)

In July 2010, Yale EM residency introduced the Areas of Concentration program (AoC). This unique program provides an intensive, focused didactic and practical experience in the third and fourth years of training. Each AoC focuses on developing a specialized skillset within Emergency Medicine, often in an ABEM-recognized subspecialty. The AoC allows the resident to develop an academic niche within the specialty of emergency medicine, preparing the resident for any career path: fellowship, academic medicine, or community medicine. The AoC will help to ensure that Yale EM residents are highly marketable to potential employers, and competitive for any academic position or fellowship.

During the EM-1 and -2 years, residents will rotate through each of the areas of concentration in order to gain exposure to all. Residents will choose their AoC during the EM-2 year. Formal AoC activities continue until the end of residency. Residents may change their AoC once.

Each AoC is led by at least one faculty member with expertise in that area. The AoC leader will oversee the activities of his/her area with participation from other faculty as appropriate.
