Second-year Yale medical student Lorenzo Sewanan won first prize in the third Yale-UCL Poetry Competition. In August he received the prize from Dean Robert Alpern.
Lorenzo Sewanan, who is beginning his second year as a student in the M.D./Ph.D. program at Yale, has received the top honor in Yale UCL Medical and Engineering Students Poetry Competition. Sewanan won for his poem, “The Gift.” In August he received a certificate and check from Dean Robert J. Alpern, M.D., Ensign Professor of Medicine.
Nicoleta Liliana Ciobanu, a student of engineering at UCL, shared the joint second prize with Andrew Melville, a medical student at UCL. Ciobanu’s poem was titled “Medusa,” and Melville’s was titled “Air.”
The competition began in 2011 for students of medicine in the two schools. Last year engineering students were also invited to submit poems. The competition affords students a chance to to show their creative side by writing and submitting a poem on a topic of their choice. The poems were judged by a panel of judges from the two schools. The winning poet receives a prize of approximately $1,500.
