Yale Child Study Center Maurice Falk Professor James Comer, MD, MPH was selected as one of five scholars to receive an honorary degree from the University of Chicago in June. Comer, who is known nationally and internationally for his creation of the Comer School Development Program in 1968, is the author of ten books and served on President Barack Obama’s Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans.
Just a year ago, in May 2023, a new portrait of Comer was unveiled at Yale to honor his transformational work in school restructuring, as well as in recognition of breaking barriers as the first African American tenured professor at the university.
The honorary degree, Doctor of Humane Letters, will be awarded during the University of Chicago’s 537th Convocation on June 3, 2023.
