The Hartwell Foundation Renews Yale's Designation as a Top Ten Center for Biomedical Research
The Hartwell Foundation has renewed Yale University's status as one of its Top Ten Centers for Biomedical Research. The designation allows institutions to nominate up to three individuals for a Hartwell Biomedical Research Award. The most recent awardee at YSM is Nina Brodsky, MD, assistant professor of pediatrics.
Kunz Is Named an ASCO Fellow
Pamela Kunz, MD, associate professor of medicine (medical oncology), has been named a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), one of 10 people nationwide who have earned that designation this year. Kunz is an international leader in the treatment and clinical research of patients with gastrointestinal malignancies and neuroendocrine tumors, and is a leading voice for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in medicine. She joins nine other Yale Cancer Center members who are ASCO fellows.
Shaw Is Appointed to ACIP
Albert Shaw, MD, PhD, professor of medicine (infectious diseases), has joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), for a term that runs through June 2027. ACIP includes 15 voting members who are responsible for making vaccine recommendations.
Brown and Gujral Earn Pediatrics' FLAME Award
Camille Brown, MD (left), associate clinical professor of pediatrics, and Jasmine Gujral, MBBS, assistant professor of pediatrics, have received the Department of Pediatrics' FLAME award for the most recent quarter. The award is given to faculty members who enhance the learning environment and go above and beyond for mentorship and education.
COVID-19 Memorial Art Project Is Honored
The COVID-19 Memorial Art project on view at 330 Cedar Street (across the street from Sterling Hall of Medicine) has been recognized by the journal Academic Medicine among its 2023 Cover Art honorable mentions. The project was led by Benjamin Doolittle, MD, MA Div, professor of medicine (general medicine). Ye Qin Zhu, MFA ’20, created the artwork using recycled PPE, along with eco-epoxy and organic materials. Communications Officer Jane E. Dee wrote the accompanying text. The project’s goal was to transform symbols from the pandemic into a message of hope.
Glaser Is Elected Vice Chair of a CARRA Committee
Daniel Glaser, MD, MPH, assistant professor of pediatrics, has been elected as the Small Centers Committee vice chair for the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance (CARRA) for a term running through 2027.
Korn Earns the Iva Dostanic Physician-Scientist Trainee Award
Lisa Korn, MD, PhD, instructor of medicine (rheumatology, allergy & immunology), has been selected to receive the 2024 Iva Dostanic, MD, PhD, Physician-Scientist Trainee Award. The award is presented each year to a member of the Department of Internal Medicine in memory of Dostanic, a trainee who died in 2011 at age 35 from ovarian cancer. Dostanic is remembered as an outstanding physician-scientist.
Moreno Is on NHMA and NHHF's "40 Under 40" List
Jorge Moreno, MD, assistant professor of medicine (general internal medicine), is on the new "40 Under 40" list issued by the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA) and National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF). The citation salutes his "unwavering dedication to uplifting the Latinx community" through work in obesity medicine, COVID outreach efforts, and advocacy for underrepresented minorities in health care.
YSM Videos Earn Film Festival Honors
Two videos created in the YSM Office of Communications were among those recognized for “best in digital storytelling” at the Association of American Medical Colleges' 11th Annual Institutional Advancement Film Festival. “For Humanity: Neuroscience Pillar” was produced by Julia Chianelli for YSM and the Office of Development & Alumni Affairs, in collaboration with RDW Group and Accomplice. "Virtual Reality: Helping Young People With Cancer Find Support” was produced and edited by Lindsey Leger. Kimberly Conner led YSM's video team.
