Cardin Receives Novartis Global Scholar Award
Jessica Cardin, PhD, deputy chair and associate professor of neuroscience, has received a Novartis Global Scholar Award to study the relationship between changes in gene expression and brain activity in models of Alzheimer's disease. The award is intended to build an active collaboration between Cardin's group at Yale and a Novartis team.
Deshpande Named to Finance and Strategy Role in Anesthesiology
Ranjit Deshpande, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology, has been named to the new role of vice chair of finance & strategy for his department. The department says Deshpande brings innovative thinking and Yale School of Management training to facilitate its strategic priority of proactive planning in a fiscally responsible way.
El-Khoury Gets Funding to Advance a Prenatal Diagnostic Assay
Joe El-Khoury, PhD, associate professor of laboratory medicine, has received funding from the non-profit organization Judd's Legacy to advance diagnostic techniques that can help improve the speed of detection of intrahepatic cholestasis in pregnancy (ICP, a liver condition that in severe cases can cause stillbirth). The condition is treatable if detected early enough, but results from samples sent to outside labs can take three to five days. A Yale-implemented assay called Total Bile Acids can take just an hour—but is not widely known or used.
Kong Co-edits Special Issue of Nicotine Tobacco Research
Grace Kong, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry, is co-editor of a special issue of Nicotine Tobacco Research titled, “Advances in Social Media Research to Reduce Tobacco Use Supplement.” The issue showcases the latest advancements in research within the field, including methods and measures for analyzing social media; innovative strategies to mitigate the impact of tobacco content on youth; and ethical, technical, and legal considerations of using social media data for research. It was sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and the NIH Office of Disease Prevention.
Mansuri Gets an IAPA Appointment, Is Cited for Attention to His Work
Zeeshan Mansuri, MD, MPH, assistant professor of psychiatry, was appointed as one of the two Early Career Psychiatrist-Representatives of the Extended Executive Committee of the Indo-American Psychiatric Association (IAPA). IAPA represents the interests of the almost 15% of all psychiatrists in the United States who are of Indian origin. In addition, Doximity has placed Mansuri in the top 5% of published psychiatrists in 2023, with more views of his research than 95% of U.S. clinicians.
