Overview

When Kate Weyman, APRN, started her nursing career, she quickly realized taking care of patients with diabetes was the area she wanted to focus.

“I was working in primary care and 50 percent of our patients had diabetes, and I realized the power of education with these patients,” says Weyman, who now works in pediatric endocrinology. “Diabetes is a condition where you can teach someone lifestyle changes and how to eat differently and you can truly improve their health.”

Weyman is a certified diabetes educator, which means she did 1,000 hours of training about how to take care of patients with diabetes (and passed an exam). “I work with children, though we see patients up until about 25,” Weyman explains. “I helped develop a transition clinic for emerging adults, patients who are leaving the pediatric clinic for the adult world. We offer nutritional refreshers, make sure their pump and sensor technology is up to date, and teach them how to advocate for themselves. When we feel they are ready, we help facilitate the actual referral process and make sure they make it to the first appointment.”

Additionally, Weyman is active with clinical research that tests new technologies and treatments for children with diabetes. “What I love is that we aren’t sitting in a lab doing research,” Weyman says. “We are seeing patients and training them to use these devices and watching how they work, which I find exciting.”
