Vaca appointed to Board of Scientific Counselors at CDC

February 12, 2017

Federico E. Vaca, M.D., vice chair for faculty affairs, professor of emergency medicine, and in the Child Study Center, has been named by the Secretary of Health and Human Services to serve on the Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) for the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Nearly 192,900 people die from violence and injuries in the U.S. each year–nearly one person every three minutes, and more than 27 million people are treated in emergency rooms as a result of violence and injuries. Working in collaboration with other institutions, the BSC is committed to studying strategies related to the prevention of violence and injuries, and advising the Department of Health and Human Services as well as the CDC and NCIPC on a variety of epidemiologic research areas including intervention, implementation and evaluation of effective evidence-based prevention strategies.

“We are honored that Dr. Vaca has been invited to serve on the BSC,” said DEM Chair, Dr. Gail D’Onofrio. “With his expertise in adolescent development and behaviors that influence the risk of motor vehicle crash morbidity and mortality, as well as his experience investigating racial and ethnic health disparities in injury and alcohol use disorders, Dr. Vaca is the ideal choice to contribute to the mission of NCIPC, which is to prevent injuries and violence through science and action.”
