(New Haven, CT) July 9, 2014

The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at the Yale University School of Medicine is pleased to announce Dr. Asim Tarabar’s appointment as Chief of Emergency Medicine at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven, Connecticut. “We are enthusiastic that Emergency Medicine will be represented at VA Connecticut, along with the other specialties,” said Gail D’Onofrio, MD, MS, Professor and Chair of the DEM, “and that our veterans will benefit from the expertise of a Yale Emergency Medicine physician.” Dr. Tarabar will also serve as the New England Toxicology Consult for the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), Region I.

A graduate of the University of Sarajevo, Dr. Tarabar brings a wealth of experience to his new position. He completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH), and a medical toxicology fellowship at New York University, Bellevue Hospital/New York Poison Control Center. Board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology, Dr. Tarabar is currently an Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and the Medical Toxicology and Quality Improvement Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine at YNHH.

At the state level, Dr. Tarabar serves on a team of faculty consultants at the Connecticut Poison Control Center, and is active in training residents and Medical Toxicology fellows at the University of Connecticut. Nationally, he is a member of the Education and Practice Committees for the American College of Medical Toxicology. “I am very excited to be joining an incredible group of physicians,” said Dr. Tarabar.

“The facility in West Haven is one of the best VA hospitals in the northeast. In addition to being a tertiary care center with state-of-the-art technology, it is also one of the core training sites for Yale University School of Medicine students, house officers and fellows, offering an exceptionally rich environment for clinical training. I am looking forward to the opportunity to provide excellent emergency care to our veterans.

Michael H. Ebert, M.D., Chief of Staff of the VA Connecticut Healthcare System states, “Dr. Tarabar’s appointment is the beginning of a valuable affiliation between VA Connecticut and the Department of Emergency Medicine at Yale University School of Medicine. VA Connecticut has emergency and urgent care services at the West Haven and the Newington campuses, and also manages emergency care for veterans across the entire state of Connecticut. This affiliation and Dr. Tarabar’s leadership will enhance our ability to provide excellent emergency care at VA Connecticut.”
