Biography

Rosemary Balsam M.D. is a British doctor (Queen’s University, Belfast) and an American psychoanalyst. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of London, and a Training and Supervising analyst at the Western New England Institute for Psychoanalysis in private practice. She teaches psychotherapy at the Yale U. Dept of Student Mental Health. Her special interest is in female development, publishing and lecturing nationally and internationally especially about how the body is represented and theorized in analysis. She has prize winning papers on gender issues, mothers and daughters,“the vanished pregnant body” etc. and is on the editorial boards of PQ, Imago and was a book review editor for JAPA. Her honors include being the National Psychoanalytic Woman Scholar for APsaA, and she was the first woman in the US to receive the coveted Sigourney Award for psychoanalytic achievement (2018).
