Biography
Tavé van Zyl, MD is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in the medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataract. Dr. van Zyl graduated cum laude in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard College and earned her M.D. from Yale School of Medicine. She went on to complete Ophthalmology residency at Harvard Medical School followed by a clinical fellowship in Glaucoma and Advanced Anterior Segment Surgery from the Mass. Eye and Ear in Boston, MA.
Prior to coming to Yale, Dr. van Zyl was a member of the glaucoma service at Mass. Eye and Ear and served on faculty at Harvard Medical School as an NIH-funded K12 scholar, investigating the molecular and genetic determinants of glaucoma. She has received additional grant support from the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative as well as the American Glaucoma Society. Her ongoing research is motivated by a passion to address fundamental questions in glaucoma with the goal of developing more effective therapies that lead to improved outcomes and quality of life for patients.
Dr. van Zyl is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American Glaucoma Society. She has published several peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals including Cell, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and the American Journal of Ophthalmology.
