Biography

Dr. Akbar is a Board certified Adolescent and Child Clinical Psychologist, who received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Saint Louis University. She completed my pre and-post doctoral training at the Yale Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine in 2004. Dr. Akbar specialized in early childhood and trauma; focusing her training on urban and culturally diverse children, adolescents, and families. For over a decade, Dr. Akbar has co-tought the Cultural Diversity and Family Therapy didactic seminar at the Child Study Center. Her focus is to increase the cultural awareness, sensitivity and competence of trainees within the context of diverse families. In addition, Dr. Akbar is a Clinical Instructor at Yale School of Pediatric Dentistry teaching the Growth and Development course. This course provides a general introduction to the area of Developmental Psychology and a survey of developmental processes that influence the growth of the physical, intellectual, and socio-emotional aspects of the child from infancy through adolescence.

Research

Overview

Pediatric psychology, Cultural diversity, Developmental evaluations, diagnostic clarification, and treatment of children 0-5.

In addition, I received minority international research training where I developed assessment tools to measure the self-esteem, stress, and trauma symptoms in children and adolescents. I also performed psychological evaluations for children referred to the psychiatric in-patient ward at the University of the West Indies Hospital through collabortion with a multidisciplinary team of professionals to diagnose and provide culturally competent counseling to children and families in crisis.
