The Joseph A. and Lucille K. Madri Professorship in Pathology was established in 2017 by the Joseph and Lucille Madri Family Foundation. The appointment is for a term of 10 years, renewable by the dean of Yale School of Medicine.

The professorship supports a mid-career researcher whose work benefits the Department of Pathology’s research enterprise. In just a few years, the professorship has had a major impact on the department. Joseph A. Madri, MD/PhD, Professor Emeritus of Pathology, said he owes many of his professional achievements to the faculty, postdocs, and students in his lab and the department who have informed and inspired his work. The professorship is his way of giving back.

Katerina A. Politi, PhD, was appointed as Madri Professor of Pathology in June 2024. Dr. Politi is Co-Leader, Cancer Signaling Networks Research Program, and Scientific Director, Center for Thoracic Cancers, and Co-Director of the Yale SPORE in Lung Cancer. Dr. Politi, a well-respected and world renowned lung cancer investigator, is principal investigator of the Politi Lab, which studies lung cancer. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association for Cancer Research. Dr. Politi succeeded the first Madri Professor, Gerald S. Shadel, PhD.
