A new collaboration between Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and Korea University will foster groundbreaking research and produce top scholars for the global scientific and medical community. The two institutions are partnering to launch the Korea University-Yale Scholars in the Biomedical Sciences Program in 2025.
“We embark on this program with great enthusiasm and gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with an excellent school of medicine such as Korea University,” said Nancy J. Brown, MD, dean of YSM.
The program will welcome select medical school graduates from Korea University as PhD candidates in Yale’s Combined Program in the Biological and Biomedical Sciences, the admissions gateway to a PhD in almost all bioscience disciplines at Yale, as well as Yale’s Investigative Medical Program, a training pathway for highly select physicians in clinical departments.
Biomedical scientists from Yale will also experience the richness of Korea University’s medical program as they regularly visit the campus to help build an ongoing pipeline of medical students for Yale.
“Our scientists mentor Korea University’s medical graduates who are motivated to become physician-scientists,” said Dean Brown.
Yale will also benefit significantly from the program.
“Essential to the diversity we strive for at YSM are the novel ways in which scientists approach their research,” said Anthony Koleske, PhD, deputy dean for basic science research. ”Physician-scientists who are educated in other countries bring unique perspectives that inspire us to think differently – especially when the individuals hail from a renowned institution, such as Korea University. Such innovative approaches will enhance the science that we produce together through the new program.”
“We are grateful to our counterparts at Korea University for their partnership and visionary leadership and look forward to the arrival of the program’s first cohort of PhD candidates in 2025,” Dean Brown said.
