Dr. Joseph Lopez, the Craniofacial fellow within the Division of Plastic Surgery, has been awarded the 2021 Betsy Winters House Staff Award. The annual award recognizes clinical staff who have made the most significant contributions to the education of medical students, as nominated by the graduating class.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to work with and learn from Yale's resilient and bright medical students,” said Dr. Lopez.
Dr. Lopez’s clinical and research interests focus on craniofacial surgery among children who suffer from congenital conditions, such as cleft lip/palate or craniosynostosis. More recently, he has developed an interest in the management of children suffering from head/neck cancer. His current research focuses on the development of biosynthetic nano-scaffolds for reconstruction of defects in the craniomaxillofacial skeleton.
“Dr. Lopez is affable and energetic, he typifies the surgeon work-ethic and goes above and beyond to include and teach the medical students,” said Fellowship Director for the program, Dr. Derek Steinbacher.
Dr. Lopez completed residency in plastic surgery at the combined Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and University of Maryland Medical Center / R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center program in Baltimore, Maryland.
