Robert Schoen, MD, MBA, clinical professor of medicine and nursing at Yale School of Medicine, was recognized as a Master of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR). The honor is given to ACR members, age 65 or older, who have made outstanding contributions to rheumatology and the ACR through scholarly achievement or service to their patients, students, and profession.
Schoen received an MD from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed an internal medicine residency at Yale New Haven Hospital and trained in rheumatology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Known for his lifelong commitment to patients in New Haven County, he maintains a full-time clinical practice in addition to conducting clinical research on infectious arthritis. Currently he is studying the treatment of chronic chikungunya arthritis in Brazil. Schoen is the author of 100 scientific publications on Lyme disease, chikungunya, and other inflammatory rheumatic diseases. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medicine and current president of the Connecticut Rheumatology Association. Since 2022, he has served as course director for the Yale International Rheumatology State-of-the-Art Symposium, which invites experts from around the world to an annual meeting in New Haven.
Schoen was pleased to receive the designation—one of the ACR’s highest honors—at the 2023 ACR Convergence. “Over the years, I have made many friends in rheumatology, from all over the country,” he said. “To be acknowledged by these peers has been very satisfying and provides a strong sense of belonging to our profession and to the ACR.”
