Maryellen Flaherty-Hewitt, MD has been named inaugural Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development in the Department of Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine, effective November 1, 2023. She is also a Professor of Pediatrics (General Medicine), the Interim Section Chief, General Pediatrics, and Medical Director of Pediatric Primary Care.
Dr. Flaherty-Hewitt completed her undergraduate studies in Chemistry/Pre-Medicine at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. She received her MD from SUNY Downstate in Brooklyn. She then completed her residency in Pediatrics at New York Presbyterian Hospital- Weill Cornell Medical School and served a year as Chief Resident. She came to New Haven in 2002 working both at St. Raphael's and Yale New Haven Hospitals.
Earlier this year she joined the Hezekiah Beardsley Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) as their secretary and is also serving a three-year term as a member of the Editorial Board, AAP Pediatrics Review and Education Program: Self-Assessment (PREP-SA).
A frequent member of the Faculty Honor Roll at the Department of Pediatrics and Connecticut Magazine’s Top Doctors list, she is also the winner of numerous awards and honors, including the Howard A. Pearson, MD Faculty Teaching Award, and the Martha Leonard Child Advocacy Award from the CT-AAP. During the 2021-2022 academic year, she completed the Certificate for Patient Centered Mental Health for Primary Care Pediatrics with The REACH Institute. Since completing this certificate, she helped six additional members of her section in General Pediatrics complete the training as well.
In this new role, Dr. Flaherty-Hewitt will report to the Chair of the Department and work closely with other departmental leaders including vice chairs and section chiefs. Some of her responsibilities include overseeing the process of promotion and tenure for faculty, which involves providing guidance and mentorship to faculty at different stages in their career, advising the Chair on identifying faculty development priorities, funding needs, and infrastructure support, developing and managing faculty mentoring programs and facilitating effective mentor-mentee and peer-to-peer mentoring relationships, supporting and enhancing existing wellbeing initiatives to meet faculty needs, while employing best practices in this area and creating accessible resources for faculty, among other duties.
