Fellow Focus in Four (September 2019)

September 17, 2019

Fellow Focus in Four will introduce you to fellows from each section of the Department of Internal Medicine. This month's fellow is Hayley Israel, MD, fellow, pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.

Why did you choose medicine and Yale?

I chose medicine because it is a career where I will always be learning and always be teaching. Doctors are curious and every patient is different, so there are new things to learn every day. That invigorates me. I chose Yale because I trained here for residency and fell in love with the medical intensive care unit. The pulmonary and critical care faculty here are excellent and it is important to me that there are so many women in the department at all levels.

What was your path to Yale?

My path to Yale started when I came to Yale College as an undergraduate and majored in chemistry. In my heart, I've been a Yalie ever since.

Perks of New Haven life?

I'm such a foodie so I love going out to eat here! You can get everything you could ever want. I also love going out on the many bike trails.

What is your 5-year goal? 10-year? Career?

I'm looking forward to becoming a clinician educator. In the next five years, I hope to get a Masters in Medical Education, in addition to my fellowship training in pulmonary/critical care. I hope to be involved in leadership of a residency or fellowship program later in my career.
