Biography

Pieter Martino is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Genetics at Yale University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Bowdoin College in 2017. Before joining the Nicoli Lab in 2022, Pieter worked as a research technician at Tufts University and as a research associate in the Rendl Lab at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he focused on stem cell niche biology where he has co-authored several publications, including a study in Nature Cell Biology. In the Nicoli Lab, Pieter's research focuses on the role of RNA-binding proteins, particularly G3BP1, in regulating hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell emergence during endothelial-to-hematopoietic transition using zebrafish as research model. Pieter explores how G3BP1 influence blood formation with implications for understanding the progression of blood-related diseases. For his work, Pieter received the Pfeiffer Fellowship in 2023 and the Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Award (NIH F31) in 2025.
