Seven teaching awards were announced at the Yale School of Medicine MD Class of 2025 Ceremony. The prizes and winners were:

The Charles W. Bohmfalk Prize for teaching in the basic sciences: Meenakshi Alreja, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry and neuroscience

The Charles W. Bohmfalk Prize for teaching in the clinical sciences: Stephen Holt, MD, MS, associate professor of medicine (general medicine)

The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award: Oluwatosin Adeyemo, MD, MPH, assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences

The Alvan R. Feinstein Award for outstanding teaching of clinical skills: Samuel Buck, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine

The Leah M. Lowenstein Award for excellence in the promotion of humane and egalitarian medical education: Sabrina Nunez, PhD, associate professor of genetics

The Francis Gilman Blake Award for outstanding teaching of the medical sciences: John Guzzi, MD, assistant professor of anesthesiology. The recipient of this award is chosen by the graduating class.

The Betsy Winters House Staff Award: Richard Maduka, MD, a PGY-5 resident in the Department of Surgery, and Ally Yang, MD, a PGY-3 resident in the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. The recipients of this award are also chosen by the graduating class to honor the house staff members who have made the most significant contributions to the education of medical students.

Steven J. Fleischman, MD, associate chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale New Haven Hospital, was inaugurated as the 76th president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists on May 18. The organization, which has more than 60,000 members in North and South America, is dedicated to improving women’s health. At Yale School of Medicine, Fleischman is an associate clinical professor in obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences and is actively involved in resident and medical student education.

Yale School of Medicine faculty members Alfonso Galderisi, MD, PhD (left), and Thomas Carpenter, MD, were honored at the European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) meeting in Copenhagen this month. Galderisi, assistant professor in pediatric endocrinology, received an ESPE Young Investigator Award, and Carpenter, professor of pediatrics (endocrinology) and of orthopaedics and rehabilitation, was presented with the group’s International Research Award.

Two Yale School of Medicine staff members—Barbara Hildebrand, BFA (left), assistant director of the Simulated Participant Program at the Yale Center for Healthcare Simulation, and Marisol Britt, BA, administrative director in the Master in Health Science Program—have been selected as the communications co-chairs for the organization Staff Professionals Across the Continuum of Education (SPACE). Hildebrand’s and Britt’s selection was hailed as “a well-deserved recognition of your dedication, leadership, and ongoing commitment to supporting and advancing our professional community.”

Akiko Iwasaki, PhD, was awarded an inaugural ME/CFS Catalyst Award by Solve M.E., a national nonprofit dedicated to making myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), Long Covid, and associated conditions widely understood and treatable. The award will help accelerate Iwasaki's study of the role of autoantibodies on the long-term neurological symptoms of ME/CFS and related conditions. Iwasaki is Sterling Professor of Immunobiology and Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, and professor of epidemiology (microbial diseases).

Amy C. Justice, MD, PhD, C.N.H. Long Professor of Medicine (General Medicine), received the 2025 John M. Eisenberg National Award for Career Achievement in Research from the Society of General Internal Medicine. The award honors senior researchers whose work has significantly impacted patient care, research, and medical education. Justice, who is also professor of public health (health policy) at the Yale School of Public Health and staff physician at the West Haven VA Medical Center, studies aging with HIV infection and was one of the first investigators to leverage the national VA electronic health record for clinical research.

Reshma Ramachandran, MD, MPP, MHS, assistant professor of medicine (general medicine), won the 2025 Bernard Lown Award for Social Responsibility from the Lown Institute for her work promoting equitable access to medicines and mobilizing physicians nationwide to challenge pharmaceutical industry influence. Ramachandran is chair of the FDA Task Force for Doctors for America. She is also co-founder and co-director of the Yale Collaboration for Regulatory Rigor, Integrity, and Transparency.

Inozyme Pharma, a clinical-stage biotech company founded on research by Demetrios Braddock, MD, PhD, associate professor of pathology, has been acquired by BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. for $270 million. Inozyme’s lead candidate, INZ-701, is an enzyme replacement therapy in late Phase 3 development as the potential first treatment for ENPP1 deficiency—a rare, progressive, and often fatal genetic disorder with no approved therapies.
