- 00:00Welcome to Yale Plastic
- 00:03and reconstructive surgery.
- 00:05My name is Martin Carney.
- 00:07I am one of the Pgy 5 residents and
- 00:10I am excited to tell you about the
- 00:12program from the residence perspective.
- 00:15If you're watching this,
- 00:16you might be asking yourself,
- 00:18why should I come to Yale for
- 00:22plastic surgery residency?
- 00:23Well, here are some of the
- 00:25features that make Yale a great
- 00:27place to train in plastic surgery.
- 00:29This includes excellent clinical training,
- 00:31autonomy and case volume,
- 00:34a collegial family style environment.
- 00:37The value placed on resident input.
- 00:40Many education and networking opportunities,
- 00:43research opportunities,
- 00:44elective time,
- 00:45international surgical missions,
- 00:47and a strong track record of
- 00:51fellowship matches.
- 00:52Starting with our schedules and education.
- 00:56This chart illustrates how you will
- 00:58spend time on rotations during residency.
- 01:01As you can see,
- 01:02we spend a significant portion
- 01:03of time even as junior residents
- 01:06on the plastic surgery service.
- 01:08We of course,
- 01:09still spend time on general surgery and
- 01:11other services including neurosurgery,
- 01:13ENT anesthesia, orthopedics,
- 01:16MOSE surgery,
- 01:18oral surgery and oculoplastic surgery.
- 01:22This allows us to become well-rounded
- 01:25surgeons while still emphasizing
- 01:26the plastic surgery experience.
- 01:29A special feature of our program
- 01:30is the elective time.
- 01:32During the Pgy 5 and six years.
- 01:35Electives can be used as time
- 01:37to visit fellowships or private
- 01:39practices around the country or world.
- 01:41Here are some examples of where
- 01:44prior residents have traveled
- 01:45for elective rotations.
- 01:46Many residents have matched at
- 01:48fellowships where they went for elective.
- 01:50Many residents have also
- 01:52traveled abroad for electives.
- 01:54This has ranged from going to
- 01:56Paris to Taiwan to Spain, Brazil.
- 01:58The possibilities of what you can do
- 02:01at this time are endless and exciting.
- 02:04Another great feature of our program
- 02:06is the resident cosmetic clinic
- 02:08staffed by the Pgy 4-5 and sixes.
- 02:11In this clinic,
- 02:12the resident acts as a surgeon
- 02:14under the guidance of an attending.
- 02:17We see patients for injectables
- 02:19in addition to cosmetic surgery.
- 02:21We offer all breast,
- 02:23body and facial aesthetic procedures.
- 02:25The resident creates the surgical
- 02:26plan and acts as the primary surgeon
- 02:29under the supervision of faculty.
- 02:32This is a sample day of a resident
- 02:34on the main service, 6:00 AM rounds
- 02:37followed by or cases or clinic.
- 02:40At 5:00 PM the on call resident
- 02:43takes over the console pager and
- 02:45helps finish up any ongoing cases.
- 02:48In terms of call,
- 02:49we share hand call with orthopedic
- 02:51surgery and facial trauma call
- 02:53with ENT and oral surgery.
- 02:54The daytime console resident is a pgy 2.
- 02:58As a pgy 2, you're the patients doctor
- 02:59in the emergency room and you are the
- 03:02one doing the bedside procedures,
- 03:03repairing lacerations,
- 03:04reducing fractures and gaining
- 03:06experience early on in residency.
- 03:09For night consults we use a night float
- 03:12system with the pgy threes and PGI fours.
- 03:14There's a chief resident or junior
- 03:16attending on call who will discuss.
- 03:18Complex and operative consoles
- 03:19with the night float,
- 03:21resident overnight as well as
- 03:23operating when there are urgent cases.
- 03:25For educational conferences we have 3
- 03:281/2 hours of protected time per week.
- 03:31On Wednesday evenings we have grand
- 03:33rounds which are guest speakers,
- 03:34visiting professors or quality
- 03:37assurance conference.
- 03:38On Friday mornings we have a mix of
- 03:40different lecture types including
- 03:41resident run lectures based on the ASPs,
- 03:44ednet curriculum,
- 03:45attending run indication conferences
- 03:48and radiology rounds, Consult,
- 03:50review, upcoming cases,
- 03:51Journal Club and craniofacial conference.
- 03:57We host a lot of visiting professors.
- 04:00These are some we've hosted over
- 04:02the past few years, a who's who of
- 04:05plastic surgery giants and innovators.
- 04:08With each visiting professor we have a
- 04:11residence only session for two hours
- 04:13prior to the grand rounds lecture.
- 04:15This is an opportunity to learn from and
- 04:18network with the visiting professor,
- 04:20expanding our perspective from our
- 04:22day-to-day activities in the program.
- 04:25After grand rounds,
- 04:26the residents and faculty have dinner
- 04:28with the visiting professor at Moreys,
- 04:31a historic Yale Dinner club.
- 04:34For other educational activity,
- 04:36the division pays for residents to
- 04:39attend both the Intern Boot camp and
- 04:41the ASMS basic course for conferences.
- 04:44If you have papers accepted,
- 04:45then you get to go.
- 04:47The section reimburses 100% for podium
- 04:50presentations at major conferences
- 04:52and 50% for podium or poster
- 04:55presentations at other conferences.
- 04:58We have access to a microsurgery
- 05:00rat lab where we get hands-on
- 05:02practice and microsurgery using
- 05:04the femoral vessels of live rats.
- 05:07We also have access to the Yale Cadaver
- 05:09Lab where we get hands-on training,
- 05:10dissecting flaps and performing other
- 05:13surgical procedures on cadavers
- 05:15through industry sponsored courses.
- 05:18Another great opportunity here is through
- 05:20Doctor Thompson's nonprofit organization,
- 05:22hand help.
- 05:23Which organizes one hand surgery mission
- 05:26a year to Central or South America.
- 05:28Two or three residents go with Doctor
- 05:31Thompson every spring, COVID pending,
- 05:32and we work to make sure everyone who
- 05:35is interested is able to go at some point.
- 05:38This is a photo from the 2019 trip to Peru.
- 05:43As for research,
- 05:44the section holds an annual
- 05:46resident research day every May,
- 05:48so everyone works on a research project.
- 05:50Yale Plastic Surgery alumnus Dr Johan
- 05:54Sassone sponsors two $2000 prizes for
- 05:57the best resident papers every year.
- 06:00After graduation,
- 06:01residents have most often gone onto
- 06:04fellowship and hand craniofacial
- 06:06or microsurgery.
- 06:07Others have also pursued private
- 06:09practice and aesthetic fellowship.
- 06:16As far as where we do our work,
- 06:17there are four main hospitals.
- 06:20These are the York Street campus
- 06:21of Yale New Haven Hospital,
- 06:23which is our main campus,
- 06:25the Saint Rayfield campus
- 06:26of Yale New Haven Hospital,
- 06:28Bridgeport Hospital and the West Haven VA.
- 06:32We also intermittently cover cases at
- 06:34the Yale Shoreline Surgical Center.
- 06:37Most of our rotations are at the main campus,
- 06:39which is the level 1 trauma center.
- 06:42This is where the bulk of
- 06:44oncologic reconstruction,
- 06:44post traumatic reconstruction,
- 06:46craniofacial surgery,
- 06:47general plastic surgery,
- 06:49and Melanoma surgery occurs.
- 06:51The Saint Raphael campus is
- 06:53where you will act as Chief of
- 06:55service as a Pgy 4 and 3.
- 06:57This is a 5 minute drive or shuttle
- 06:59ride away from the main campus.
- 07:02SRC houses the Mcgiveney Surgical Center,
- 07:05which is a state-of-the-art
- 07:06outpatient facility where most of the
- 07:08elective hand surgery is performed.
- 07:13Bridgeport Hospital is Connecticut's
- 07:15only burn center, and we have burn
- 07:18and general surgery rotations there.
- 07:19Bridgeport is about 30 minutes away,
- 07:21the furthest you would be
- 07:24driving in this residency.
- 07:25At the West Haven Veterans Hospital,
- 07:27you act as a junior attending
- 07:29during your Pgy 5 year.
- 07:31This is a 10 minute drive
- 07:32from the main campus.
- 07:33You are the surgeon for this patient
- 07:36population and the experience is incredible.
- 07:39Moving on from sites, let's meet the
- 07:42people who make up Yale plastic surgery.
- 07:45Here are the current residents.
- 07:47Hopefully you will get to know us
- 07:49better sometime around the interview.
- 07:50We are all excited to meet you.
- 07:54Here are the 13 full-time faculty
- 07:56covering the breadth of plastic surgery,
- 07:59including general reconstructive surgery,
- 08:01microsurgery, hand and upper extremity,
- 08:04craniofacial surgery,
- 08:05Melanoma and skin cancer,
- 08:07cosmetic surgery,
- 08:08and gender affirming surgery.
- 08:12We also work with many private
- 08:14practice plastic surgeons in the
- 08:16area who are especially valuable
- 08:19for our aesthetic surgery education
- 08:21and teach us how to run a practice.
- 08:24We also have fellows and hand breast
- 08:28microsurgery and craniofacial surgery.
- 08:30We work closely with many different students.
- 08:33The majority of Yale medical
- 08:34students take a research here,
- 08:36so we have students working
- 08:38with us full-time every year,
- 08:39both from Yale and other institutions.
- 08:43We also have an amazing team of
- 08:45apps that help streamline workflow
- 08:47on the floor and in clinics.
- 08:49They are all incredible and they
- 08:51will help make your life better
- 08:53and easier during residency.
- 08:59Coming to Yale has some nice benefits.
- 09:01Through the House Staff Office,
- 09:03we are paid similarly to our
- 09:04New York City counterparts,
- 09:06but without the same cost of living.
- 09:08We also receive a health staff allowance
- 09:10from the GE Office of $2000 per year,
- 09:12with an additional allowance from
- 09:14the section of plastic surgery
- 09:16of $500.00 to $1500 per year.
- 09:19The House staff allowance can be used for
- 09:21a wide range of expenses including loops,
- 09:23textbooks, electronics.
- 09:25And travel to clinical sites.
- 09:27In addition, we get medical,
- 09:29dental and vision insurance,
- 09:31a retirement matching plan
- 09:33and cafeteria meal cards.
- 09:35If you come here,
- 09:36you will live in or around New Haven,
- 09:38which is a great place to live.
- 09:41We are in New England,
- 09:43which is a beautiful place to
- 09:46experience all Four Seasons.
- 09:48Many of us live in downtown New Haven,
- 09:50like in the building that can be
- 09:52seen from the hospital window.
- 09:54But those who want more space
- 09:56can live in neighboring towns.
- 09:58There are many great options
- 09:59of towns to live in,
- 10:00whether you prefer the beach,
- 10:01the woods,
- 10:02or a suburb where you were still
- 10:05close to shopping and restaurants.
- 10:07It's hard to mention New Haven without
- 10:10talking about Yale University.
- 10:12Through Yale,
- 10:13we have access to breathtaking libraries.
- 10:17As well as theater.
- 10:21A group of residents and faculty
- 10:23went to a show at the Yale Cabaret.
- 10:26Yale also has free world class art museums,
- 10:30and the Harvard Yale game is at Yale
- 10:32every other year and gives us another
- 10:35reason to get together outside of work.
- 10:41Outside of Yale and the
- 10:43surrounding areas of Connecticut,
- 10:44there is great hiking.
- 10:47Which can be especially
- 10:48beautiful during the fall.
- 10:50You can also spend time at the beach.
- 10:54Or go fly fishing and even
- 10:56surfing in Rhode Island,
- 10:58about an hour away.
- 11:01There are a number of farms,
- 11:03orchards, wineries and breweries.
- 11:07And more music and arts at
- 11:09events like the International
- 11:11Festival for Arts and Ideas.
- 11:13New Haven is also a great Food City,
- 11:16and notably a pizza town.
- 11:22There are excellent brunch spots.
- 11:25Great coffee and bubble tea.
- 11:29Ice cream.
- 11:32An array of international and
- 11:34affordable selections at the many
- 11:37food carts outside the hospital.
- 11:39There are clam shacks where you
- 11:41can try a Connecticut lobster roll.
- 11:44Sushi and omakase.
- 11:48And fine dining.
- 11:52We'll wrap up with showing how
- 11:54the best part of your plastic
- 11:56surgery is definitely the people.
- 11:58Residency is challenging,
- 11:59rewarding, grueling and frustrating
- 12:01at times with long hours.
- 12:04So you want to surround yourself
- 12:05with people you enjoy working
- 12:07with and who will support you.
- 12:09We definitely have that here.
- 12:11And these next slides show US spending
- 12:13time together in and out of work,
- 12:14and many of our fun traditions.
- 12:17Whether it's at charity
- 12:19fundraisers or holiday parties,
- 12:21to happy hours and weekend get togethers.
- 12:24We also have group outings,
- 12:26like the annual boat day on
- 12:27Doctor Thompson's sailboat.
- 12:32In addition to boat day,
- 12:33we've had an annual golf day.
- 12:37A now annual tennis day at
- 12:41Doctor Thompson's house.
- 12:42Doctor Cloon hosts Lamb roast and
- 12:44gatherings in his beautiful backyard.
- 12:48Trivia night.
- 12:51Paintballing with doctor Alperovich.
- 12:55Bowling and pickleball.
- 13:00Or listening to, well, me play live music
- 13:23Anyways, if you're tired of New Haven and
- 13:25want to get out of town for the weekend,
- 13:27Boston, New York City,
- 13:29and Philadelphia, to name a few,
- 13:31are just a few hours away by train or car.
- 13:35To put it all together,
- 13:37Yale plastic surgery is a family.
- 13:40We like to work hard and play hard.
- 13:43We enjoy spending time
- 13:45with each other at work.
