  • 00:01Well, thank you. I appreciate
  • 00:03that, Dean Brown. It has
  • 00:04been a delight,
  • 00:06to get
  • 00:07to know the Yale School
  • 00:08of Medicine,
  • 00:10more deeply,
  • 00:13and, of course, long before,
  • 00:16joining the corporation
  • 00:17knew it so well by
  • 00:18reputation.
  • 00:19But what an extraordinary place
  • 00:21it is, and we are
  • 00:23so glad,
  • 00:24to be able to welcome
  • 00:26all of you to the
  • 00:26Yale community. And for me,
  • 00:28it's great for me to
  • 00:29get a chance to meet
  • 00:30you,
  • 00:32so early in my time
  • 00:34here. As Dean Brown said,
  • 00:35I just started July one.
  • 00:37It's been,
  • 00:39a bit of a whirlwind
  • 00:40that I know is going
  • 00:41to continue,
  • 00:43for quite a while,
  • 00:45But it's always great early
  • 00:47on to get to spend
  • 00:48some time with faculty,
  • 00:51and especially its newest members
  • 00:53who, like me,
  • 00:55are joining this community,
  • 00:57and we're all kind of
  • 00:58starting on this journey together.
  • 01:02Of course, faculty are at
  • 01:03the heart of Yale.
  • 01:06Your roles
  • 01:07as researchers,
  • 01:08as educators, as clinicians,
  • 01:12really serve as an inspiration
  • 01:15to our students. When our
  • 01:16students see you
  • 01:18at a lecture or working
  • 01:20in your laboratory
  • 01:21or in the clinic,
  • 01:23they see someone who represents
  • 01:26all of what is great,
  • 01:29about the Yale School of
  • 01:30Medicine and sets the standards
  • 01:32for who it is they
  • 01:34wish to become
  • 01:35in their professional
  • 01:36careers.
  • 01:37They see your commitment.
  • 01:40They see your optimism for
  • 01:42the future
  • 01:43in the ways that your
  • 01:45research,
  • 01:46your teaching,
  • 01:47your scholarship,
  • 01:48and your clinical care is
  • 01:51trying to both provide for
  • 01:52our community and change the
  • 01:54world.
  • 01:55One of the things that
  • 01:56really distinguishes
  • 01:58Yale,
  • 02:00is that
  • 02:01coming across campus is not
  • 02:03far.
  • 02:04It is an extraordinary
  • 02:06gift
  • 02:06to have this fully contiguous
  • 02:09campus.
  • 02:10And I know that many
  • 02:11of you over the time
  • 02:13of your careers here will
  • 02:15be deeply integrated
  • 02:17into Yale, not just the
  • 02:19Yale School of Medicine, but
  • 02:21into Yale as part of
  • 02:22this university.
  • 02:23Some of you will be
  • 02:24doing collaborative
  • 02:26teaching and research projects
  • 02:28that
  • 02:29bring you into the fuller
  • 02:30Yale community.
  • 02:32And I hope that in
  • 02:33other ways, you'll just wanna
  • 02:34participate
  • 02:36in the extraordinary
  • 02:37range of things that take
  • 02:39place at Yale. This is
  • 02:41such an amazing community.
  • 02:43But you are also part
  • 02:44of the New Haven community,
  • 02:46and you are one of
  • 02:47the most important ways in
  • 02:49which Yale is integrated into
  • 02:52the New Haven community, and
  • 02:54you really are an inspiration
  • 02:56for the rest of Yale.
  • 02:57So
  • 02:58the ways that you care
  • 03:00for
  • 03:01this community and our surrounding
  • 03:03regions,
  • 03:05especially
  • 03:06New Haven's most vulnerable populations,
  • 03:10is so important to our
  • 03:11mission and to who we
  • 03:13are.
  • 03:14So you can think, for
  • 03:15example, of the Haven free
  • 03:17clinic,
  • 03:18this student run primary care
  • 03:20clinic,
  • 03:21that helps to provide for
  • 03:23New Haven neighbors,
  • 03:26who
  • 03:27usually are uninsured and don't
  • 03:29have easy access to care,
  • 03:31remarkable
  • 03:32care.
  • 03:33Our doctors, including our dean,
  • 03:36cycle through and volunteer on
  • 03:38a rotating
  • 03:39basis,
  • 03:41and
  • 03:42the base the clinic serves
  • 03:43over four to five hundred
  • 03:45New Haven residents who otherwise
  • 03:46would not have
  • 03:48this kind of wrap around
  • 03:49amazing care. So thank you
  • 03:51for that. We have other
  • 03:52faculty led,
  • 03:55initiatives that bring together
  • 03:57clinicians with community
  • 03:59leaders to help make sure
  • 04:00that we're working on issues
  • 04:02around wellness, whether that is
  • 04:04blood pressure,
  • 04:06or other topics that help
  • 04:07keep New Haven healthier.
  • 04:10I know this summer that
  • 04:11Yale Medicine and Yale New
  • 04:13Haven Yale New Haven Health
  • 04:14System, that's always a mouthful,
  • 04:17launched the first mobile
  • 04:19retail pharmacy and clinic,
  • 04:22that's bringing
  • 04:23health care out to to
  • 04:25where people are. And that's
  • 04:26just a few of the
  • 04:28ways in which
  • 04:29the Yale School of Medicine
  • 04:31is doing such an important
  • 04:32role as an ambassador
  • 04:34for us in the community,
  • 04:36but also really helping to
  • 04:38connect and care for this
  • 04:39community.
  • 04:41And each of you, no
  • 04:42matter what your role is
  • 04:43going to be at the
  • 04:44Yale School of Medicine, and
  • 04:45usually you serve multiple roles,
  • 04:47right, as educators, as researchers,
  • 04:49as clinicians,
  • 04:51you really are the ones
  • 04:53who are
  • 04:54setting that standard for how
  • 04:56we care for future communities.
  • 04:58So
  • 04:58I personally wanna thank you
  • 05:00for choosing Yale,
  • 05:02for making this the place
  • 05:04where you are taking the
  • 05:05next step in your career.
  • 05:07I stand alongside
  • 05:09Dean Brown and Provost Stobel
  • 05:12ready to support you,
  • 05:14in the work that you
  • 05:15are going to do here.
  • 05:16Because while you are committed
  • 05:18to caring for this community,
  • 05:20we wanna make sure that
  • 05:21we are there committed to
  • 05:23caring for you, to giving
  • 05:24you the support you need
  • 05:26for your professional development, to
  • 05:27helping make the Yale School
  • 05:29of Medicine
  • 05:30the place where you want
  • 05:32to build your lives and
  • 05:33your careers.
  • 05:35So I wanna welcome you
  • 05:36to Yale. I look forward
  • 05:38hopefully in future opportunities to
  • 05:40be able to meet each
  • 05:41and every one of you,
  • 05:43and working alongside you in
  • 05:45the years to come. So
  • 05:46thank you and welcome to
  • 05:47Yale.
