Meet Dr. Alyssa Gillego

Alyssa Gillego, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery (Surgical Oncology) who cares for patients at Smilow Cancer Hospital. Dr. Gillego performs breast biopsies, lumpectomies, mastectomies, and sentinel lymph node biopsies in addition to nipple-sparing mastectomy for cancer patients and women undergoing prophylactic surgery. Her goal is to provide the highest quality of care to all her patients using a multidisciplinary, individualized approach.

  • 00:00I'm a breast cancer surgeon,
  • 00:02so I take care of
  • 00:03primarily breast cancer patients, but
  • 00:05I also take care of
  • 00:07patients who don't have breast
  • 00:08cancer but may have
  • 00:10benign disease in the breast,
  • 00:12such as an infection,
  • 00:14or I also take care
  • 00:15of women who are at
  • 00:16high risk for developing breast
  • 00:18cancer. When we treat breast
  • 00:19cancer, one of the most
  • 00:20important things is to find
  • 00:22out what type of breast
  • 00:23cancer a woman has.
  • 00:25Most breast cancers are hormone
  • 00:27sensitive or estrogen sensitive,
  • 00:29and those cancers typically are
  • 00:31treated with a combination of
  • 00:32surgery
  • 00:33and a medication that will
  • 00:35target the estrogen
  • 00:37that's
  • 00:38stimulating the cancer.
  • 00:39Fortunately,
  • 00:40breast cancer
  • 00:42is usually a curable disease.
  • 00:44It's a highly treatable disease
  • 00:46with good outcomes
  • 00:47so that I can take
  • 00:48care of a woman and
  • 00:50then continue to follow her
  • 00:52for the rest of her
  • 00:53life along with,
  • 00:55my team.
