Biography

Professor Snowden received his B.A. from Harvard in 1968, and his B.Phil and D.Phil. from Oxford University in 1972 and 1975. He has taught at London University from 1978 until 1991 and at Yale since 1991. His research interests include: the comparative history of epidemic diseases; the history of public health; the impact of emerging and resurgent diseases; issues in medical ethics; and bioterrorism. He is currently Chair of the Program in the History of Science and Medicine.

His teaching areas are the history of infectious diseases, the history of public health, and the intellectual history of medicine.

Research

Overview

Frank Snowden is the Andrew Downey Orrick professor of history and professor and chair of history of science and medicine. His research focuses on the history of epidemic diseases and their impact on society. Dr. Snowden studies the comparative history of epidemic diseases, the history of public health, the impact of emerging and resurgent diseases, issues in medical ethics and bioterrorism. Dr. Snowden is also a scholar of Italian history and of European social and political history, and examines the societal impact and the progression of malaria in Italy and in Europe during the twentieth century.

Dr. Snowden received his D.Phil. from Oxford University. He served as a resident at the American Academy in Rome and is a member of the American Historical Association and the American Association for the History of Medicine. Dr. Snowden is a recipient of the Gustav Ranis Prize from the MacMillan Center at Yale, the Helen and Howard R. Marraro Prize from the American Historical Association, the Malaria Foundation International award and the William Henry Welch Medal from the American Association for the History of Medicine.Dr. Snowden's current research projects are the history of epidemic diseases and their impact on society; the global crisis of malaria; and the history of emerging and reemerging diseases.
