Biography
Tomas Correa-Gaviria was born in Medellin, Colombia, where he studied Medicine at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana. During medical school, Tomas actively engaged in research as a member of SIFAM (Collaborative Research Group of Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana) and VID Clinical Laboratory. His research focus centered on clinical Infectious Diseases projects, with a particular emphasis on HIV, H. pylori, and infections associated with cardiac implantable devices.
In his final year of medical school, Tomas completed two clinical electives in Infectious Diseases and Pulmonary Medicine, at Yale New Haven Hospital. In July 2022, Tomas joined Yale School of Medicine as a Postdoctoral Research Associate. Currently, he is working in the Department of Infectious Diseases under the mentorship of Dr. Erol Fikrig.
Tomas focuses on basic science research centered on malaria, with a specific emphasis on investigating the interaction between pathogen (P. falciparum/ P. berghei), vector (Anopheles mosquito), and mammalian host. His current projects involve the identification and development of novel protein targets with malaria transmission-blocking activities which have the potential to reduce the transmission of the disease.
Tomas aspires to become an Internal Medicine doctor and continue being involved in translational research and teaching.
