Biography

Alexandra Halberstam is a Student Research Assistant and member of the SEICHE Center Student Advisory Board at the SEICHE Center. Alex is an undergraduate at Yale College double majoring in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and History of Science, Medicine, and Public Health. Among other activities, she works with incarcerated students through the Yale Undergraduate Prison Project, and studies in the Perry lab at the Department of Physiology, researching the relationship between metabolism and cancer.

Since joining the SEICHE center, Alex has participated in a variety of projects, exploring programs that effectively achieve decarceration, the spread of COVID in carceral settings, the impact of exposure to incarceration on cancer morbidity and mortality, and the health outcomes and experiences of individuals recently released from Federal Prison, particularly following the First Step Act. Alex plans to continue this work—joining public health, history, policy, and medicine to give justice-involved individuals tools to promote health equity in their own communities—after she graduates.
