Overview
Julie Goodwin, MD, is a pediatric nephrologist who treats a broad range of conditions, including hypertension, electrolyte derangements, structural kidney diseases, genetic kidney problems, and chronic kidney disease at all stages. She provides care including dialysis, and pre- and post-kidney transplant support.
Dr. Goodwin studied engineering before she became interested in nephrology, which she describes as “a very mathematical and cerebral branch of medicine, with a great mix of acuity and chronicity allowing inpatient and outpatient practice,” she says. “I also always knew I wanted to work with children.”
As a mother of three, it’s easy to put young patients at ease, she says. “I’m pretty up to date on all the latest Disney movies, sports teams, and pop culture, so I can usually start with something that is familiar to them as an ice-breaker.” She monitors her patients over time and gets to know their families, and is continually impressed as she watches the children she treats grow up and manage their condition or disease with confidence.
An associate professor of pediatric nephrology, Dr. Goodwin has a research laboratory, and is studying the effects of therapeutic approaches associated with tissue-specific steroid microenvironments, and the connection between cardiovascular and renal diseases.
