We are pleased to announce that Mona Sharifi, MD, MPH has been named Section Chief of General Pediatrics at Yale School of Medicine (YSM) and Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital, effective September 1, 2024.
Dr. Sharifi is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics (General Pediatrics) and Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Yale School of Medicine, and Associate Professor of Biostatistics (Health Informatics) at the Yale School of Public Health. She received her medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, TN and completed her MPH in Quantitative Methods from the Harvard School of Public Health, in Boston MA. She completed her pediatrics residency at Boston Children’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Boston Medical Center/Boston University School of Medicine and completed fellowship in Harvard-wide Pediatric Health Services Research fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital.
Board certified in both pediatrics and clinical informatics, Dr. Sharifi has received national and international recognition for her expertise. She received the Mae Gailani Junior Faculty Award from the Department of Pediatrics at YSM, was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society at Vanderbilt School of Medicine, the Award for Excellence in Tutoring from Harvard Medical School, among many others.
She is active in professional societies and serves as Co-Director of the Academic Pediatric Association’s Continuity Research Network, a national primary care practice-based research network, is an elected member of the Partnership for Policy Implementation of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and a member of the Society for Pediatric Research. She also serves on the editorial board of the journal Childhood Obesity.
With continuous federal funding from the NIH, CDC, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality since 2010, her research is focused on improving pediatric primary care delivery systems to prevent chronic diseases and to promote health equity, with a specific focus on prevention and management of obesity. She leads two active NIH R01-funded multi-site trials evaluating the dissemination and implementation of interventions for childhood obesity.
In her new role, Sharifi will oversee the Section of General Pediatrics and be responsible for building robust programs in research, education, and quality improvement. In addition, Dr. Sharifi will be leading a newly-established Program in Pediatric Health Services and Implementation Research. She will continue in her role as Co-Director of the National Clinician Scholars Program at Yale.
