The Committee on International Health (CIH) Annual Fall Symposium will highlight international research from the Student Travel Program, and honor former members and Yale professors, the late Robert Shope and Jordi Casals.
The symposium, poster session, research presentations and reception will take place Wednesday, October 20, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Jane Ellen Hope Building Lobby and Room 110, 315 Cedar St.
The CIH fall program is traditionally dedicated to Wilbur G. Downs, a tropical and infectious diseases expert who believed that students learn by doing.
"We are taking the opportunity to also pay tribute to two famous colleagues, Shope and Casals, who recently passed away," said CIH Chair Curtis Patton, professor of epidemiology of microbial diseases and head of the Division of Global Health in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale School of Medicine.
The Downs International Health Student Travel Program, which is administered by the CIH, is a highly competitive program that funds research projects for graduate students in medicine, epidemiology and public health, nursing and biomedical studies around the world. Projects range from three months to one year and take place in countries such as India, Kenya, South Africa, Iran, the Philippines, Haiti and Chile.
This year, 17 students completed what Patton called, "the most successful program for students studying abroad," in the country.
The students, their school affiliations, graduation year and country in which their projects were carried out are: Nibila Alibhai, MPH 2005 (Tanzania); Jessica Beard, M.D. 2007 (Kakuma, Kenya); Anna M. Beitin, MPH 2005 (Zambia); Roderick Corro Deano, MPH 2005 (Philippines); Heather Marie Gainer, MSN 2005 (Haiti); Farnoosh Hashemian MPH 2005 (Iran); Hassana A. Ibrahim, M.D. 2007 (Nigeria); Aida E.
