Andrew Goodman, PhD, chair and C.N.H. Long Professor of Microbial Pathogenesis at Yale School of Medicine and director of the Yale Microbial Sciences Institute at West Campus, has received an Innovation Fund award from the Pew Charitable Trusts. The award brings together pairs of researchers to establish interdisciplinary partnerships and launch creative research projects. Goodman and Ivaylo Ivanov, PhD, of Columbia University, will continue their work examining how drugs and gut microbes activate antimicrobial proteins that alter the gut microbiome.

The American Physiological Society presented its 2026 Physiology in Perspective Walter B. Cannon Award to Gerald I. Shulman, MD, PhD, George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and professor of cellular & molecular physiology. The Cannon Award, the most prestigious award the APS bestows, honors a researcher’s lifetime achievements. Over the last four decades, Shulman, who is also co-director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center and investigator emeritus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, transformed understanding of type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease by uncovering the fundamental cellular defects that cause insulin resistance. His discoveries have reshaped both basic science and clinical care.

The Lung Cancer Research Foundation has awarded the 2025 LCRF Minority Career Development Award in Lung Cancer to Nelson LaMarche, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Pathology and the Cancer Biology Institute at Yale West Campus. LaMarche’s research focuses on developing myeloid-targeted immunotherapies for cancer, with emphasis on how tumors remotely communicate with distant organs to alter normal physiology and subvert the antitumor immune response.

Jessica Furtado, PhD, postdoctoral associate in the Department of Cellular & Molecular Physiology, received an American Heart Association Postdoctoral Fellowship to pursue a project in understanding the role of the meningeal lymphatic system in the context of obesity. The fellowship aims to enhance the training of promising students in pre-doctoral or clinical health professional degree training programs who are pursuing careers as scientists, physician-scientists, or other clinician-scientists.

Daniel Glaser, MD, MPH, assistant professor of pediatrics (rheumatology), will be the 2025 Physician Medical Honoree at the Connecticut Arthritis Foundation's Jingle Bell Run on Dec. 14 in Madison, Conn. Glaser provides comprehensive care to children with all types of rheumatologic diseases, as well as supervising pediatric residents in the primary care clinic. In addition to his clinical work, he also serves in multiple committee leadership roles at the Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance.

Raul Guzman, MD, has been appointed vice chair of faculty affairs in the Department of Surgery, effective Nov. 15, and will serve on the Yale School of Medicine’s Term Appointments and Promotions Committee. Guzman is the Donald Guthrie Professor of Vascular Surgery at Yale School of Medicine, chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy at Yale New Haven Hospital, and surgeon-in-chief of vascular surgery in the Heart and Vascular Center for the Yale New Haven Health System.

James E. Kempton, MD, associate professor of ophthalmology and visual science, has been appointed chief of surgical services for the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven. Kempton serves as vice chair for veterans’ affairs in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. A nationally recognized expert in vitreoretinal diseases and retina surgery, he also directs Eye Care Services at the West Haven VA, where he has played a pivotal role in advancing comprehensive ophthalmologic care.

Hun Millard, MD, vice chief of psychiatry and behavioral health for Yale New Haven Hospital, deputy chair of psychiatry for the Yale New Haven Health System, and medical director of Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital, has been accepted to the Chief Medical Officers (CMO) Leadership Academy for 2026-2027. The 15-month program, sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges, aims to train and prepare the next generation of CMOs to successfully meet both the clinical and business demands of the position.

Pediatric nurse practitioner and physician assistant Beth Moller, DNP, APRN, received Yale New Haven Hospital’s APP Clinical Excellence Award, which honors advanced practice providers for their dedication to patient care and improving health outcomes. She was nominated for the honor in recognition of her service on the DART Child Abuse Consultation service.
