Overview
Peter G. Whang, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in treating a wide range of pathological conditions of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions of the spine. He routinely performs a variety of cutting-edge and open surgeries for the spine, including such novel approaches as sacroiliac joint fusion, a minimally invasive procedure to correct pain in the lower back that is still not widely available.
“At Yale Medicine, we have world-class physicians who are also researchers participating in the original clinical trials for this procedure,” he says. “The field is advancing by leaps and bounds. We are able to offer treatments that we weren’t able to think about a few years ago.”
In addition to seeing patients, Dr. Whang is an investigator in various clinical trials, and is involved in the development of new spinal implants and techniques. He also researches the biology of spinal fusion and bone healing, bone grafting substitutes and evidence-based medicine. He serves on multiple committees for the National Association of Spine Surgeons. Dr. Whang is a professor of orthopaedics and rehabilitation at Yale School of Medicine.
