Sharon K. Inouye, M.D., director of the Yale K12 Mentored Clinical Research Scholar Award Program, has announced four award recipients for 2004 and 2005.
Recipients include Karen Dorsey, M.D., postdoctoral fellow, pediatrics (hematology-oncology), Nina Kadan-Lottick, M.D., associate research scientist, pediatrics, Peter Morgan, M.D., assistant professor, psychiatryand Margaret Pisani, M.D., internal medicine (pulmonary).
"We are extremely pleased by the commitment of this group of investigators to patient-oriented research, and by the diversity of their research interests," said Inouye. "The pool of applicants in this first round of K12 selection was very strong and choosing among them was extremely difficult. The executive board did a wonderful job."
The K12 Program, funded by the NIH Center for Research Resources provides a generous stipend and a research and tuition allowance to physician investigators interested in pursuing a career in patient oriented research. Applicants submit a research proposal and career development plan, which are evaluated by members of the program's executive advisory board. Key to the program is the relationship between candidates and their faculty research mentor.
Dorsey, a Ph.D. candidate in the Investigative Medicine Program, from the Pediatrics Department is studying methods of measuring and quantifying physical activity in clinical populations of overweight children. Also from Pediatrics, Kadan-Lottick will assess the contribution of family to psychosocial functioning in children who are survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the most common childhood cancer. Morgan's project will focus on the role of sleep deficits in cocaine relapse. Pisani will research the contribution of psychoactive drugs to the development of delirium in the Intensive Care Unit.
