Biography

Dr. Tuan's underlying interests focus on global health through the lens of healthcare infrastructure and social justice; the intersection of how life is impacted by infectious diseases, geography, and society; and the syndromes seen in tropical medicine.

She completed her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University and Yale University, respectively. She graduated from Chicago Medical School. She completed Internal Medicine Residency at University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.

She is the Associate Director of the Yale Antivirals & Vaccines Research Program. She is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in Infectious Diseases at Yale School of Medicine. She is a Core Faculty member of the Donaldson Firm, providing care for patients with HIV, infectious diseases, and other medical conditions, at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

She is a Principal Investigator for the following Yale School of Medicine research studies: 1) Evaluating Pitavastatin to Reduce Risk of Cardiovascular Disease in HIV-Infected Adults (REPRIEVE) (NIH/ACTG-funded clinical trial), 2) Pfizer mRNA Influenza vaccine clinical trial, 3) AIDS Clinical Trial Group (ACTG) STOMP Study: Trial of the Safety & Efficacy of Tecovirimat for Treatment of Human Monkeypox Virus Disease (Co-PI): 4) Qualitative Assessment of SARS-CoV-2 Immunogenicity (QUASI) after COVID-19 vaccination in People Living with HIV, 5) Outcomes of Pregnant Women Exposed to Sotrovimab for Treatment of COVID-19 in the Omicron Predominant Era (PRESTO).

She is a Sub-Investigator for the Yale Pfizer/BioNTech (adult, pediatric, booster) & Sanofi COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials. She is a Sub-Investigator for Yale School of Medicine HIV clinical trials: 1) Study to Assess the Effectiveness & Safety of Lenacapavir for HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PURPOSE 2); 2) Evaluating the Safety & Efficacy of Bictegravir/Lenacapavir vs. Stable Baseline Regimen in Virologically Suppressed People With HIV-1 on Stable Complex Treatment Regimens, 3) Study of Broadly Neutralizing Antibodies GS-5423 & GS-2872 in Combination With Lenacapavir in Virologically Suppressed Adults With HIV-1. Her other research focus is as a Sub-Investigator for the NIH/NIMH R21 grant "HIV PrEP Perspectives of Liberian Adolescent Girls & Young Women and their Providers (PRECIOUS)," in collaboration with physicians at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia.

She was awarded the Yale Institute for Global Health Leadership in Global Health Fellowship as a World Bank COVID-19 Vaccine & Primary Health Care Fellow. She was a Yale Johnson & Johnson Global Health Scholar in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (2022), Kigali, Rwanda (2019) and Butare, Rwanda (2017). She is a violinist in the Yale Medical Symphony Orchestra and pianist. She is a Fellow writing in The OpEd Project of the Yale Public Voices Fellowship (2023-2024).

Her medical literature has been published in HIV Medicine, Emerging Infectious Diseases, American Journal of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene, PLOS One, BioMed Central Infectious Diseases, Rwanda Medical Journal, and British Medical Journal Case Reports.

She has been featured in The Washington Post, Newsweek, National Geographic, London Broadcasting Company News, Contagion, WTNH News 'Health Headlines,' NBC Connecticut News, News 12 Connecticut, and Hartford Courant.
