First Legalized Mobile Retail Pharmacy and Clinic Provides Care to People Where They Are

July 10, 2024

Yale Medicine (YM) and Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) recently introduced the first mobile retail pharmacy and clinic in Connecticut, bringing health care to people where they live.

This project, known as InMOTION, serves communities throughout Connecticut, the first state in the nation to legalize mobile retail pharmacy services. InMOTION’s goal is to make better health accessible to anyone disconnected from the health care system for any reason. It is led by Sandra Springer, MD, professor of medicine (infectious diseases).

What is InMOTION mobile pharmacy and clinic?

InMOTION is a mobile pharmacy clinic program run through Yale Medicine and Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) that offers pharmaceutical and clinical services through the first legalized mobile retail pharmacy in Connecticut. InMOTION’s team of a pharmacist and clinicians on the mobile pharmacy/clinic and Community Health Workers in the community all work together to provide access to pharmacy services and health care as well as linkage to social services to community members wherever they are. The mobile pharmacy and clinic provide a private and confidential space for people’s health care needs.

Who can be treated?

Anyone who could benefit from the accessibility of mobile pharmacy and clinical services should utilize our services. If someone has difficulty making it to medical appointments or picking up medications because they do not have transportation, have young children, support family members living with disability, or are currently unhoused and in need of services where they are, the InMOTION mobile pharmacy can bring vaccinations, medications, and clinical care and disease management to the person needing care.

What conditions can be treated?

Common conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes can be screened for, and treated with, our primary care services. We also offer testing and treatment for HIV, HCV, and STIs; prevention for HIV (PrEP), as well as wound care, mental health care, diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders including opioid and alcohol use disorder, and more.

How did this project begin?

Springer envisioned a mobile healthcare system to bring primary, infectious disease, substance use disorder, commonly needed clinical care, and, importantly, medications to people where they live. Connecticut is the only state where retail mobile pharmacies are legalized as of July 1, 2023. Springer won an Avant Garde Award in 2022 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, which has funded this revolutionary initiative. YNHHS provides the pharmacy services for InMOTION.
