Biography

Dr. Roald A. Øien, PhD, is Professor of Special Education and Developmental Psychology at the Department of Education at UiT - The Arctic University of Norway. He also holds positions as a Clinical Professor at the University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) and as an Assistant Professor of Developmental Disabilities at Yale Child Study Center.

Dr. Øien’s research is deeply rooted in developmental psychology and special education, with a specific focus on early developmental, behavioral, and temperamental features in children, both with and without neurodevelopmental disorders. His clinical expertise spans a range of conditions including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Tourette Syndrome.

In his scholarly work, Dr. Øien has contributed significantly to the understanding and early identification of autism spectrum disorders. His publications often explore the intersection of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, aiming to improve diagnostic tools and therapeutic interventions for young children and adolescents. Notably, he has published extensively on topics such as gender dysphoria in individuals with autism, substance use problems in individuals with ASD, and the use of virtual reality in therapeutic interventions for neurodevelopmental disorders.

Dr. Øien also serves as Senior Associate Editor for the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disabilities.
