  • 00:00Thanks a lot, Sam. I
  • 00:02am so excited that you're
  • 00:03all here as new faculty,
  • 00:05and I do wanna say
  • 00:06that my door is always
  • 00:07open in the center for
  • 00:09medical education. It's been introduced
  • 00:11a little bit to you
  • 00:12today, and I've put some
  • 00:13slides together to give you
  • 00:15an overview of what we
  • 00:16can help support you in
  • 00:18your education journey.
  • 00:23I wanted to give you
  • 00:24a little bit of an
  • 00:25overview of the structure.
  • 00:27Here you see the dean,
  • 00:28and you, of course, met
  • 00:30Jessica Iluzzi this morning who
  • 00:32has created
  • 00:33in her couple of years
  • 00:34as deputy dean a wonderful
  • 00:36structure
  • 00:37that has been very inclusive
  • 00:39for the curriculum,
  • 00:40for working with the hospital,
  • 00:42and also the library, so
  • 00:44it's a very large structure.
  • 00:46What we've now done is
  • 00:48we have a center for
  • 00:49medical education
  • 00:51that includes
  • 00:52continuing medical education, so all
  • 00:54your CME
  • 00:55will go through us in
  • 00:57the center for medical education,
  • 00:59and then we have an
  • 01:00assessment hub where we help
  • 01:02to assess faculty
  • 01:03on their teaching and learning.
  • 01:06We also help to assess
  • 01:07students. We have a full
  • 01:08time expert in student assessment.
  • 01:11And, again, as you think
  • 01:12about any of your own
  • 01:14evaluations, on the break I
  • 01:15was talking with a couple
  • 01:16of your faculty, and I
  • 01:17said, know what track you're
  • 01:19on, and we'll be talking
  • 01:21later today about the various
  • 01:22tracks, but you need to
  • 01:24be collecting your teaching evaluations.
  • 01:26When you receive it, if
  • 01:27you sort of feel like,
  • 01:28oh, dear. It's not quite
  • 01:30what I would like it
  • 01:31to be, just come privately
  • 01:33to us in the center.
  • 01:34We'll sit confidentially,
  • 01:36work with you, and just
  • 01:37talk with you. It doesn't
  • 01:38go back to your chair
  • 01:39or anyone else. Our door
  • 01:41is open to you and
  • 01:43support of you in education.
  • 01:45When you think back and,
  • 01:46of course, I I loved
  • 01:47when the dean said, oh,
  • 01:48I don't really like mission
  • 01:49statements.
  • 01:50But the mission statement really
  • 01:51is an important piece for
  • 01:53us because our educational mission
  • 01:56is really to work with
  • 01:58you, to have
  • 01:59a
  • 02:00continuing medical education unit where
  • 02:02we can help you become
  • 02:04educators
  • 02:06like you want to become.
  • 02:07If you want to do
  • 02:08research and scholarship in education,
  • 02:11we have so many opportunities.
  • 02:14So here
  • 02:15you might want to take
  • 02:16a picture of this because
  • 02:18you do need to sign
  • 02:19up, and you can follow
  • 02:20the QR code to do
  • 02:22this. If you haven't already
  • 02:24got your profile for CME
  • 02:26credits,
  • 02:27we give credits for all
  • 02:29the education sessions, and they're
  • 02:31all free. But we do
  • 02:32have this
  • 02:34cloud learning platform.
  • 02:36So just take a little
  • 02:37or look at the QR
  • 02:38code and get your profile
  • 02:40up to date. I'll pause
  • 02:41for a moment.
  • 02:50You can also go on
  • 02:51our website and
  • 02:52register.
  • 02:54So here we are. We
  • 02:56as Jessica mentioned a little
  • 02:58bit this morning, we do
  • 02:59educator development
  • 03:02and pedagogy
  • 03:03assessment,
  • 03:04curriculum, educational technology, research, and
  • 03:07scholarship.
  • 03:07Doctor. Michael Green is in
  • 03:09the department of medicine, but
  • 03:11he works full time with
  • 03:12us in the center, and
  • 03:13he heads our student assessment.
  • 03:16Bill Rando,
  • 03:17we recruited him, this was
  • 03:18a wonderful recruit
  • 03:20with Jessica Aluzzi, to really
  • 03:22think about pedagogy.
  • 03:24What how do you as
  • 03:25a teacher promote learning?
  • 03:27Do you just give information
  • 03:29and assume
  • 03:30someone that your learner is
  • 03:31learning? Whether you're teaching residents,
  • 03:33fellows, medical students, we have
  • 03:35a director of pedagogy to
  • 03:36help think of how to
  • 03:38engage your learners with you.
  • 03:39John N. Candela heads all
  • 03:41our assessment, that's faculty assessment,
  • 03:43program assessment,
  • 03:45curricular assessment,
  • 03:46and Gary Leyden does all
  • 03:48our educational technology.
  • 03:50And when you start thinking,
  • 03:52but we have a session
  • 03:52coming up in our master's
  • 03:54program, where how do you
  • 03:55do a podcast?
  • 03:56Or maybe you actually wanna
  • 03:58use a Qualtrics survey,
  • 04:00and there's so many online
  • 04:02materials that are available and
  • 04:04free to you. So Gary
  • 04:05helps guide you through that
  • 04:07for the use in educational
  • 04:08technology.
  • 04:10So here we think of
  • 04:11your development and this is
  • 04:12open to
  • 04:14all of our faculty and
  • 04:15staff.
  • 04:16So we have the fellowship,
  • 04:17it's a year long program,
  • 04:19you can apply to it,
  • 04:20we've already started, we start
  • 04:22in the summer
  • 04:23and it's just a couple
  • 04:24of hours Monday afternoon. So
  • 04:26it's not a huge amount
  • 04:27of your time, but it
  • 04:29prepares you in thinking about
  • 04:31educational scholarship
  • 04:33that then you can move
  • 04:34into research.
  • 04:35So educational scholarship
  • 04:37is work that is peer
  • 04:38reviewed,
  • 04:40public,
  • 04:41and a platform that others
  • 04:43could build on. So maybe
  • 04:44you wanna develop a workshop
  • 04:45that you're going to share
  • 04:47and present at the anesthesiology
  • 04:49annual meeting or the surgical
  • 04:51educators meeting or at MedEd
  • 04:53Day here.
  • 04:54We also have a master's
  • 04:56in health science
  • 04:58and it's a medical education
  • 05:00track and I'm so excited
  • 05:01about this. We started it
  • 05:03in two thousand seventeen.
  • 05:04So many of you as
  • 05:05a clinician,
  • 05:06educator, scholar
  • 05:08really want to become
  • 05:10knowledgeable on how to do
  • 05:11research and mentor others, And
  • 05:13we've had thirty eight graduates
  • 05:15in the program, and it's
  • 05:17a two year program with
  • 05:18thirty five percent protected time.
  • 05:21I'm I'm so excited about
  • 05:23this program.
  • 05:24And then we have a
  • 05:25discussion group series and our
  • 05:27yes program. And these are
  • 05:28open. We do them on
  • 05:29Zoom to try and make
  • 05:30it easy and convenient for
  • 05:32you, and you'll be getting
  • 05:34notices
  • 05:35so you can sign up
  • 05:36and register.
  • 05:39Do mark your calendars. This
  • 05:41is fun.
  • 05:42It's med ed day. I've
  • 05:43been doing it now almost
  • 05:45fifteen years,
  • 05:46and the next one is
  • 05:48June fifth. We have our
  • 05:49keynote speaker who will be
  • 05:51talking about AI and
  • 05:54chat GPTs, Mark Triola from
  • 05:57NYU
  • 05:58as we think of how
  • 05:59do we start thinking about
  • 06:01the use of AI in
  • 06:02education. So mark your calendars
  • 06:04and try and clear your
  • 06:05schedule for that day. What
  • 06:07we really feel about our
  • 06:08center is that as you
  • 06:11are all teachers,
  • 06:13we have awards.
  • 06:14And the center, we we
  • 06:16send out a note to
  • 06:17all our residents and learners
  • 06:19to say to them,
  • 06:21please let us know about
  • 06:22your outstanding teachers
  • 06:24and these are the awards
  • 06:25that we then give at
  • 06:26commencement.
  • 06:27We also, many of you
  • 06:29are nominated
  • 06:30but you don't receive the
  • 06:31actual award and we write
  • 06:33letters to you and your
  • 06:35chair to say you were
  • 06:36nominated. It's very prestigious.
  • 06:38So again, as you start
  • 06:40thinking about the Yale environment
  • 06:41which is very inclusive,
  • 06:43start thinking about your education
  • 06:45and if you want to
  • 06:47become a little bit more
  • 06:48effective or you wanna start
  • 06:49thinking about what's some research
  • 06:51or articles, our doors are
  • 06:53always open. And, again, we're
  • 06:55gonna be talking a little
  • 06:56bit later in the afternoon
  • 06:58about
  • 07:00so we're an academic home,
  • 07:02but we really work with
  • 07:04you on your CV one
  • 07:05and CV two as you
  • 07:07think about putting it together
  • 07:09around education.
  • 07:11Of course,
  • 07:12doctor Ball in in the
  • 07:13OAPD
  • 07:14looks at all of you
  • 07:15and his door is always
  • 07:16open. But, again, as you
  • 07:17think about how do you
  • 07:18put it together, so many
  • 07:19people ask me, gee, what
  • 07:21should I be doing? Should
  • 07:22this count or this workshop
  • 07:24or, oh, I gave a
  • 07:25grand rounds. Yes. We'll help
  • 07:27you put it in your
  • 07:29CV,
  • 07:30start collecting your information
  • 07:32so you really start your
  • 07:33Yale experience
  • 07:35on a good four foot
  • 07:38as you step forward.
