Research
Overview
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Infections following a stroke account for approximately 1/3 of all stroke deaths. Dr. Dylla's research focuses on understanding the pathophysiology of stroke and how this understanding can be used to advance patient care in the prehospital and emergency department (ED) settings. This includes developing analysis of the early immune response, and early metabolomic and epigenomic changes in response to stroke that can lead to immunosuppression and post-stroke infections. Additionally, Dr. Dylla seeks to improve patient outcomes through analysis of prehospital and ED stroke care, working to develop easy acute interventions to promote early stroke recognition by EMS and rapid transport to a certified stroke center.
As Director of the Emergency Medicine Specimen Biobank (EMSB), Dr. Dylla oversees collection of blood, urine, and saliva samples from ED patients. This biobank supports additional research in acute care. It is crucial for facilitating critical research in the ED while ensuring safe and ethical patient enrollment. This biorepository currently supports additional research collaborations in cardiac arrest outcomes, post-concussive syndrome, infection response, post-stroke treatment approaches, cardiac ischemia pathophysiology, and diagnostics for aortic dissection. The EMSB continues to seek opportunities for additional collaborations that improve patient outcomes.
As Co-Director of the Emergency Medicine Research and Growth Experience (EMERGE) Program, Dr. Dylla connects investigators with pre-trained, research-ready postgraduates embedded in the ED, delivering dependable support for participant screening, enrollment, and data collection. EMERGE advances the practice of emergency medicine through cutting-edge research that impacts real patients and clinical practice. It also provides a mechanism for postgraduate students to gain research experience, mentorship, and prepare for exciting healthcare careers.

Clinical Care
Overview
Layne Dylla, MD, PhD, is an emergency medicine physician who cares for adults and children with urgent or life-threatening conditions. She provides rapid assessments, stabilizes injuries and serious infections, and collaborates with others to ensure patients receive the follow-up care they need.
As an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Dylla studies new ways to diagnose and treat acute stroke in both the prehospital and emergency department settings, aiming to reduce long-term complications. “The best part of my job is helping patients who may be critically ill or who may lack access to other health care options,” she says.
Dr. Dylla completed her medical training and doctoral degree at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She pursued her residency in emergency medicine and dual fellowships in experimental therapeutics and emergency medicine research at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
