We measured multiple factors to quantify behavioral state, including hippocampal and cortical activity and field potential, along with synaptic activity in auditory cortical neurons. We found that pupil diameter revealed a great deal about the arousal state of the animal and his ability to perform the tone-in-noise detection task.
