Normal membrane potential - note the low frequency action potential generation in this layer 5 pyramidal cell. Top trace is a nearby multiple unit recording in layer 5 illustrating that the UP state is synchronized in the local population. B. Hyperpolarization of the neuron to prevent the generation of action potentials in the intracellularly recorded neuron illustrates the barrages of synaptic activity occurring during the UP state.
