Application of an in vivo field to a cortical slice strongly controls neuronal activity

Figure 11. Comparison of the multiple unit discharge of layer 5 in a cortical slice in response to repeated presentation (interleaved with no field) of an electric field recorded in vivo. The overlay of the applied field and the multiple unit activity (lower left) illustrates the strong correlation between these. Plotting the the degree to which the multiple unit activity was modulated versus the strength of the applied field revealed a significant effect with fields between 0.25 and 0.5 mV/mm (lower right).
