Simultaneous somatic and axonal whole cell recording reveals that the synaptic activity of the Up state propagates long distances down the axon
Figure 8. By performing whole cell patch clamp recordings simultaneously from the axon and the soma of layer 5 pyramidal neurons, we were able to show that the synaptic activity of spontaneous Up states propagates down the axon. This activity propagates far enough to reach a significant number of presynaptic terminals, even in the absence of action potentials.
