Contrast Adaptation Occurs Mainly Within the Cerebral Cortex

A. Method of quantification of the degree of adaptation during a one minute exposure to a high contrast (30-60%) grating. Illustrated is a cell that adapted to 33.2% of the response at the beginning of the high contrast period. LGNd cells exhibited relatively little adaptation (B) indicating that contrast adaptation is not prevalent in either the retina or LGNd. In contrast, in the cerebral cortex, both simple (C) and complex (D) cells exhibited strong contrast adaptation.
