Biography

Dr. Caitlin Ryus is an Assistant Professor in Emergency Medicine and the Co-Director of the Yale Emergency Scholars Fellowship. She is a NIDA funded Yale-Drug use, Addiction, and HIV prevention Research Scholar (DAHRS). Dr. Ryus earned her bachelor’s in psychology from Bryn Mawr College and MPH from Columbia University with a concentration in socio-medical sciences. After working several years in global health research at Oxford University, she pursued a career in medicine. Dr. Ryus attended Brown University for medical school where she concentrated in disaster medicine. She completed her emergency medicine residency and research fellowship through the Yale Emergency Scholars Program.

Dr. Ryus’s current research combines the disciplines of community-engaged research with health services research and political epidemiology to evaluate the evidence bases for health and social policies. In her work, she examines health outcomes and health service utilization among unhoused patients with substance use disorders.

She leads the Yale ED Homelessness Task Force– an interdisciplinary team of community organizations, government representatives, street medics, social workers, and people with lived experience of homelessness dedicated to improving ED care among New Haven’s homeless population.

Clinical Care

Overview

Caitlin Ryus, MD, MPH, is an emergency physician at Yale Medicine with a focus on health equity, substance use disorders, and improving care for marginalized populations, particularly those experiencing homelessness. In her role, she treats a broad range of critical medical conditions, responding to patients in acute distress as well as those who experience barriers to routine care.

"I chose emergency medicine because it is a specialty that combines clinical care with public health." Dr. Ryus says. "What I find most rewarding is the ability to make an immediate impact, whether that’s providing life-saving interventions or connecting patients to services that address the root causes of their health issues."

As the co-director of the Yale Emergency Scholars Fellowship, she trains future leaders in academic emergency medicine, fostering their clinical skills alongside their research development.
