Biography

Moe J. Uddin, MD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases, at Yale School of Medicine. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Electronics and Systems Engineering from the University of Connecticut College of Engineering before obtaining his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where he received a certificate in Global Health Practice with Honors. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at UConn Health and his Infectious Diseases fellowship at Brown University.

Dr. Uddin's academic interests bridge infectious diseases and biomedical engineering, with a particular focus on periprosthetic joint infections, antimicrobial therapeutics, and global health. His published research includes work on antibiotic treatment strategies for community-acquired pneumonia, tick-borne encephalitis, and treatment evaluation of periprosthetic joint infections. He has presented at conferences nationally and internationally, including at IDWeek, the Biomedical Engineering Society Conference, and at the University of Cape Town in South Africa.

A dedicated educator and advocate for health equity, Dr. Uddin has served in numerous leadership roles, including co-leader of the Brown Residency International Global Health Training Pathway (BRIGHT) program and as a longstanding member of the Urban Service Track and AHEC Scholars Advisory Committee. He has completed international medical missions in Uganda and South Africa and has been a public voice for equitable vaccine access. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American College of Physicians.

Research

Overview

Dr. Uddin's research program utilizes both infectious diseases and biomedical engineering, with a central focus on periprosthetic joint infections (PJI). Drawing on his undergraduate training in biomedical engineering and electronics systems, he seeks to advance the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of implant-associated infections through interdisciplinary approaches. His work encompasses PJI biomarker development, antibiotic-impregnated biomaterials, and novel diagnostic strategies aimed at improving outcomes for patients with prosthetic joint and device-related infections. Additionally, Dr. Uddin maintains an active interest in antimicrobial therapeutics, with published research on antibiotic treatment strategies for community-acquired pneumonia and clinical investigations of tick-borne and neurotropic infections. His global health research, conducted with colleagues in other countries to evaluate treatment in resource-limited settings. Dr. Uddin's long-term goal is to build a clinical and translational research program that leverages engineering principles to develop next-generation solutions for musculoskeletal infections.
