Biography

Melanie Sion, MD, FACS, is a surgeon for Yale Medicine General Surgery, Trauma & Surgical Critical Care. She treats patients with a variety of conditions and combines emergency general surgery with minimally invasive surgical and robotic approaches.

“I went into medicine with a special interest in the care of underserved and vulnerable populations both domestically and internationally,” says Dr. Sion, who is interested in the improvement of equity in health care delivery. “One of the many reasons I enjoy trauma and emergency general surgery is the ability to provide exceptional care to everyone in need of emergency surgical services,” she says.

In addition to her work as a trauma and general surgeon, Dr. Sion has contributed to the provision of surgical services in low- and middle-income countries. She has a special interest in developing surgical services in Southern and East Africa and in educating the Yale community on health disparities in surgical care due to global poverty.
