Overview
John Colberg, MD, is a urologist at Yale Medicine specializing in urologic oncology. The conditions he most commonly treats include prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney cancer. He also has many years of experience in both open and robotic approaches to surgery.
Dr. Colberg began his medical school training at the Washington University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency at the Yale School of Medicine. “I always wanted to do something surgically, and I thought urology had multiple aspects that were challenging,” he says. In 1998, he joined Yale Medicine as faculty. Dr. Colberg was previously a faculty member at Washington University School of Medicine starting in 1990.
Dr. Colberg’s favorite part of his job is taking care of his patients and remembering details about their cases and their lives. He will often bring these up in conversation to make his patients feel more at ease and to reassure them that he cares about their particular situation.
In addition, Dr. Colberg will walk his patients through the various experiences he’s had treating other patients or seeing his own family members go through medical procedures to reassure them that he understands what they are going through and that he has a diverse amount of experiences he draws from in the operating room.
In addition to seeing patients, Dr. Colberg conducts research on various urologic cancers. He is a professor of urology in the Department of Urology at Yale School of Medicine.
