Biography

I completed my undergraduate studies with honors at the University of California, Davis, earning a degree in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. After college, I became actively involved in clinical research, assisting in the recruitment and execution of clinical trials at the UC Davis Medical Center. Simultaneously, I worked full-time as an Emergency Medical Technician in Sacramento, providing pre-hospital trauma and emergency care to a diverse range of patients in the community.

I went on to pursue my Master of Medical Sciences at Yale School of Medicine's Physician Associate Program, where I discovered my passion for surgical services, procedures, and imaging techniques. This passion led me to my current role specializing in Neurosurgery Spine with Yale Medicine. In this position, I focus on delivering comprehensive and patient-centered care to individuals with degenerative, traumatic, and oncologic spinal conditions, both in the ambulatory and operating room settings.

Overview

Gaia Mohr-Tonachini, MMSc, PA-C, is a physician associate specializing in neurosurgery with a focus on spinal conditions.

She cares for patients with spinal conditions, including degenerative diseases, spine trauma, and spine oncology. Mohr-Tonachini works closely with spine surgeons to assess, diagnose, and manage complex cases, aiming to improve patient outcomes through both surgical and non-surgical interventions. “Patients are in capable hands with our comprehensive team,” she says.

Mohr-Tonachini emphasizes the support provided by the neurosurgical team and the importance of clear communication. “I always explain diagnostic study results in detail and review all treatment options to help ease any anxiety,” she says. “Patients appreciate having a point person who is with them every step of the way, from the initial evaluation to their post-operative visits.

She manages various spine cases, using advanced imaging techniques—including X-ray, CT scan, SPECT bone CT, CT Myelogram, and MRI—to support patient understanding and patient-centered decision-making.

“My favorite part of working in neurosurgery spine is the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on patients’ lives,” Mohr-Tonachini says. “Seeing them regain function and quality of life before, during, and after treatment is deeply rewarding.”
