Biography

Allen Hsiao MD, FAAP, FAMIA, is Professor of Pediatrics, Biomedical Informatics and Data Science, and of Emergency Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine and serves as the Chief Health Information Officer (CHIO) for the Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health System. Dr. Hsiao also serves as the Vice Chair Clinical Systems, Biomedical Informatics and Data Science.

He received his BA in Biomedical Ethics and MD from Brown University, then completed residency training in Pediatrics at Yale before completing fellowships and board certifications in Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Medical Informatics. He has served on numerous medical informatics-related committees for the Hospital and University, as well as nationally for groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, Health Information Management Systems Society, and the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions.

Dr. Hsiao has published many articles in the pediatric and healthcare informatics literature and regularly presents nationally and internationally on leveraging informatics and the electronic health record (EHR) to support research, optimize systems, and improve transitions of care. He has also served as primary investigator or co-investigator on several NIH and AHRQ-funded grants examining the ways health information technology can impact and improve healthcare. Allen also co-directs the Informatics Core for Yale’s Clinical Translational Science Award (CTSA) from the National Institutes of Health. In this capacity, he works closely with the Yale Center for Clinical Investigations leadership to equip investigators with the tools and information needed for translational and clinical research. This includes leveraging the industry-leading functionalities of the EHR (Epic) system and the clinical trials management system (OnCore) for investigators and patient focused research, with particular emphasis on expanding clinical trials participation by patients from diverse backgrounds to improve health equity and inclusion in clinical research.

As the CHIO, Dr. Hsiao leads the medical informatics and data and analytics teams for the School and System, including an experienced group of physician informaticians and the Joint Data and Analytics Team. He and team provide leadership of the EHR and technology to provide the functionality, clinical decision support, and innovation needed to deliver the best healthcare possible. His Joint Data and Analytics Team includes the database administrators, data architects, and a team of over 60 analysts that provide the reporting and analytics for the System and the School, supporting operational, clinical, and research reporting and data needs and is led by a talented Chief Data & Analytics Officer. Current priorities for Dr. Hsiao and team include supporting COVID-19 informatics needs, predictive analytics, innovating with large language models, strategies to address growing physician burnout, patient engagement, population health, and supporting genomic medicine.

Clinical Care

Overview

Allen Hsiao, MD, is a pediatric emergency medical specialist who treats patients for asthma, fever, sports injuries, and other conditions.

“I love the variety of challenges that we are faced with in pediatric emergency medicine, including all types of diseases and injuries, from the most primary care issues to complex organ or metabolic issues,” Dr. Hsiao says. “I am passionate about finding ways to improve the care we can give to our patients with the use of technology, from simple things like how to make the right information available at the right time in the electronic health record, to leveraging patient portals to empower patients clinically and in research, to the application of predictive analytics to help physicians better combat disease.”

Dr. Hsiao has found that working with a diverse group of specialists at Yale and having access to the latest research has steered the type of care he has been able to offer patients. “We may not always have the answer right away, but we have a great group of physicians, nurses, and other clinicians who are passionate about helping children and won't stop until they can help as much as possible,” he says.

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Hsiao is chief medication information officer for the Yale School of Medicine and Yale New Haven Health System. He has served on numerous medical informatics-related committees at Yale, as well as nationally for such groups as the American Academy of Pediatrics, Health Information Management Systems Society, and the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions. He also has served as primary investigator or co-investigator on several NIH and AHRQ-funded grants examining the ways health information technology can impact and improve health care, and contributed dozens of peer-reviewed papers to the medical informatics literature.
